So thank you in advance for your understanding.
This large wind chine is designed with the pomegranate motif, a particularly iconic pattern among Nabeshima ware.
Pomegranates, said to be native to Southwest Asia, were introduced to Japan during the Heian period. In early summer, they bear vivid orange-red flowers, and when their fruit ripens in autumn, the thick outer skin splits open to reveal countless seeds. This imagery, reminiscent of flourishing progeny, made pomegranates a popular symbol of fertility and good fortune as an auspicious motif.
Furthermore, a motif combining the "Buddha's Hand Citron," representing good fortune, the "peach," representing longevity, and the "pomegranate," representing fertility, is known as "Santan-mon" (Three Abundances Motif) from the "three abundances" of "abundance of fortune, abundance of longevity, and abundance of offspring."
