The phoenix, which is the motif of the painting, has been said to be "the auspicious bird that appears when the Holy Heavenly Son appears." "Sacred Son" means a ruler who brings peace, that is, a good emperor.

The karahana pattern was popular in China during the Tang dynasty, and under the influence of that, it was used in Japan during the Nara period. It is a splendid pattern that combines several kinds of plant motifs such as lotus, palmetto, and peony. The design consists of a lotus flower and peonies in the center of the design, surrounded by double and triple wreaths with fan-shaped lateral flower patterns connected by arcs. It is characterized by the fact that it spreads concentrically in multiple layers from the center toward the outside. Since ancient times, it has been mainly used as a pattern for weft brocade.
