The peony pattern has been used as a decorative pattern for costumes and crafts since the Heian period. Since ancient times, it has been revered in China as the "King of Hundred Flowers." After being introduced to Japan as a medicinal herb in the Nara period, it has become a symbol of beauty, wealth, and power due to its gorgeous large flowers.
Since the Nara period, butterflies fluttering with their graceful wings have been transformed into various patterns. During the Heian period, it was used to decorate the costumes and furnishings of aristocrats, during the Momoyama period, it was used for Noh costumes, and during the Sengoku period, samurai began to decorate their helmets and armor. It is said that the butterfly pattern, which emerges from a chrysalis, has the meaning of rebirth from death. In addition, the combination with chrysanthemum, which represents perpetual youth and longevity, was considered auspicious.
